You can tell a hand-tufted rug by the cotton backing that covers the bottom of a hand-tufted area rug. This backing protects the latex application that locks a hand-tufted fiber in place. Hand-knotted rugs do not have a backing, and you can see the design on the back of a hand-knotted rug. Hand-knotted rugs cost much more than hand-tufted rugs.
